In 1905, Toorop came upon the path of religion and saw in it a second revelation. Baptised Protestant at age ten, he converted to Catholicism and henceforth structured his work around his faith. His art thus became more religious and mystical.

The painter subsequently revisited neo-Impressionism and then simplified his style. He refined his formerly undulating Art Nouveau lines, which became stiff and more severe, but nevertheless retained their extreme delicacy.

Toorop died in La Haye in 1928.

Until the twentieth-century rupture, Toorop’s art filled the gap between Symbolism and Art Nouveau in a remarkable manner. His departures make him one of the most brilliant representatives of Symbolism and Art Nouveau, whereas the different developments of his style make him a precursor of most of the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century.
